Fern Cottage

Set on a long, narrow site, this former 19th-century workman’s cottage has been carefully adapted and extended to create a light-filled contemporary home. The original structure is retained and celebrated, while new interventions respectfully reinterpret its scale and rhythm.

Two courtyards divide the plan, drawing natural light and fresh air deep into the interior. These open voids establish a sequence of indoor–outdoor spaces, bringing clarity, ventilation, and moments of calm to the heart of the house.

Oriented east–west, with its broad elevation facing south, the design maximises solar gain and daylight throughout the day. The result is a modest yet spatially rich dwelling that transforms a once compact cottage into a bright, breathable, and connected living environment.
