Genkan House

Japanese inspired renovation and extension

Inspired by our client’s Japanese heritage, this renovation and extension reimagines a 1960s detached house through the principles of Japanese architecture. From spatial planning to material selection, the design creates a calm and deliberate environment that bridges Japan and Ireland.

A defined “genkan” at the entrance marks the transition from outside to in, introducing a ritual of arrival through a subtle change in level and material.

The reconfigured layout promotes fluid movement and quiet moments, strengthening the connection between interior and garden. A restrained palette of natural materials; untreated timber, blackened timber, stone, and textured plaster adds warmth and depth, with finely crafted joinery reinforcing a sense of harmony throughout.
